We are delighted to announce the completion of HEAL-D programme delivery for our ongoing research study.

A total of 17 HEAL-D courses were delivered across four UK cities from 2024 to 2026. That’s 272 hours of HEAL-D! See more details here

Of the 300 volunteers taking part in the HEAL-D research study, 148 completed the HEAL-D programme. The remaining 152 have been assigned to complete their local NHS diabetes structured education programme. We will monitor the health of all volunteers until December 2027 to compare how well the HEAL-D programme helps people of Black African and Black Caribbean heritage manage their type 2 diabetes compared to these existing NHS programmes.

Participants were able to attend the HEAL-D programme face-to-face, online, or through a combination of both delivery formats. The flexible delivery model helped ensure that participants could access sessions in a way that best suited their needs and circumstances, whether in person or remotely.

Completing programme delivery marks an important milestone for the HEAL-D study and reflects the commitment of participants, facilitators, community partners and research staff who have supported the programme over the past several years.

While programme delivery has now finished, the study continues as follow-up activities are completed and researchers analyse the findings. We look forward to sharing the study results and what we have learnt about delivering culturally suited diabetes support for Black African and Black Caribbean communities.
